Memorial day is a day to remember our troops both the fallen and the living, ones that have served and still serve and their families. We can never express how thankful we are for their service, even though most are humble about it and say its "just their job" without their sacrifices we wouldn't have the freedom we have today.
The freedom to be able to celebrate this national holiday with family and friends and maybe even a little portrait session!
I had the pleasure of working for Mrs Dominguez a couple of years back when I was working as a temp back when I was pregnant with my first child. I had kept in touch with her and a couple other employee's from that job. Recently she e-mailed and asked about getting some family pictures taken. I was eager to do so! We agreed to meet at Antioch Park in Overland Park on Memorial day in the morning. The weather here in KC has been warmer then most springs so I was glad we started out in the morning.
We started out in the rose garden, the sun was high and bright so we decided to take pictures in shady area's instead. They turned out pretty good! I love this picture of the kids ummm offspring peeking around the pillars.
Their son who is college bound in the fall wanted to have some pictures with his girlfriend too. They truly were a sweet couple and family. This was probably one of the most relaxed and willing families I've worked with. I think it helped I already knew Mrs Dominguez but I really enjoyed myself with this session.
What I loved about this family is that they all seemed to really love each other and get along really well. It didn't feel forced like they were just doing it for pictures. I'm not saying most families don't love each other, but you know how some teenagers can be or how some people aren't very willing to get their pictures taken. This family just seemed so natural and close. Its refreshing to see.
As the shoot progressed the temps quickly rose into the upper 80's. It was a rather warm day!
The son was about to go off to college in the fall. So Mrs Dominguez wanted some personal pictures of her and her son. I suggested this pose, he kinda groaned jokingly and she loved the idea. She told me I was going to make her cry! By the look of that smile he didn't really mind so much... He might mind if his mom shows his future college buddies though. ;)
Love this series of pictures, there are actually several like this. This was one of my favorites though. Completely natural smiles from both children while the parents in the background are somewhat blurred looking on.
Another cute one, family in the background are smiling at the young couple. Looks as if the family approves of their relationship. Which is always a good thing!
Mrs Dominguez and her daughter wanted some pictures with a tree where they were "hugging" the tree.
An adorable picture of a self proclaimed "tree huger" who wanted a picture of her hugging the tree. :)
I LOVED the crossed arms in the back, I believe it was the sons idea. I think I saw out of the corner of my eye that he was telling her to cross her arms. Regardless of who's idea it was it was CUTE!
This picture and the next few are some pictures of the young couple about to go off to the same college together. I really liked the series of these as well... Ok actually I love ALL the pictures from this family session.
And finally, a couple pictures of just Mr & Mrs Dominguez, who without their love for one another would not have had such a wonderful family for me to photograph!
Thanks again to the Dominguez Family for using Highlights Studios Photography! We look forward to serving you whenever the need arises in the future!

Family Portrait Session
I had the pleasure of being the photographer for Mike & Aletha's wedding. Now almost 2yrs later they gave me the pleasure of further documenting their growing family!
They arrived at our studio (home) for their portrait session. Little man was getting hungry so Mom needed to feed. While that was in process I got to work photographing father and daughter before moving on into doing some nursing shots. I think nursing is a beautiful thing and nothing to be ashamed about (done modestly of course). Mom wanted some pictures of her nursing and I was happy to do it for her. I did try to make the pictures a little more modest for any children that might come upon this blogs sake. But there are a few pictures in this blog.
Mother & Daughter, both remarkably strong women!
Sweet moments between husband & wife... Father & Mother. Best Friends.

I just love the loving look on Aletha's face as she is feeding her son. Nothing stronger then the love between a mother and her child.
Of course while there is nothing like the love between a mother and a child. Father and Son always has a special bond too! This little guy was sooo tiny and too sweet!
Then there are the pictures with siblings! In today's world of teenagers more engrossed in their personal lives it was refreshing to see the adoration of this big sis!
More tender moments with Mother and Son. Isn't he so sweet?
Family Photo's! What a perfect family!
One of my favorite pictures! It shows the protection and comfort in just a simple touch. The Father's strong hand/arm protecting his family, while the mothers gentle hands circle to comfort her son. Love it!

A set of sweet moments with each family member.
After nearly 2hrs of bright lights and camera's in his face he was finally awake for a bit... But not to willing to pose for pictures.
And finally.... Another *Warning* View discretion advised picture....
Sometimes their more for comfort then anything. I LOVE how he is staring at her, while she tenderly looks down at him. To sweet!
